Acute shortening of sleep duration in an increase in hunger in the morning and evening. In a crossover study of 12 normal-weight men, the sleep duration for a night of 8 hours reduced to 4 hours, while the recovery time was two hours earlier (ie, 6 instead of 8 clock clock). The total energy intake on the day after 4 hours of sleep was higher by 22% than under normal sleep duration and was significantly higher than the small additional increase in energy expenditure caused by the prolonged period of wakefulness.
